Dear Friends:

Progress continues on the two projects I wrote about in last month’s news. In the case of Working Class Heroes, Yvonne and I have completed the recording of 20 songs which will eventually be available on a cd. We’re working to finish the accompanying book which will include musical notation (guitar chords and melodies) for all the songs, plus background information on each song and the people who wrote them. Once this is completed PM Press will announce a publication date.

Songs of Slavery and Emancipation has also taken a big step towards completion. We have confirmed our recording dates of October 6th, 7th and 8th at Berea College in Kentucky. Combined with the songs recorded in Peterboro, NY and Amherst, MA, these recordings will be the bulk of the slave and abolitionist songs in our repertoire. That will leave a few special songs that require a different set up to accomplish but that will be done later in the year. I will give a full report on the status of the project in October’s news.

Public Appearances

After completing the work in Berea, I will travel to New York City to join historian Aaron Leonard in a program entitled Music-Rebellion-Repression. Aaron has written two books, Heavy Radicals and A Threat of the First Magnitude, which deal extensively with FBI surveillance, infiltration and disruption of the New Communist Movement in the Sixties, especially the Revolutionary Union and the Revolutionary Communist Party. Aaron’s working on a new book called The Bureau and the Folksinger, which will delve into the FBI’s attempts to suppress iconic figures such as Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. We will present the same program in Philadelphia. Please note: the Philly date is before the NYC date. Hope you can make it.
